The Face in the Water (2019)

for brass quintet

I explored the concept of self-reflection and change in this piece, equating the idea of self-reflection to seeing your reflection in water. If the water is stable and calm, the image reflected is clear; but, when the water is disturbed, the ripples alter and distort the image. Whatever disturbs the water is something strong and powerful that causes an upset in your life - that change alters the perception of your reflection. The floating melody first introduced represents the image in the water; the melody passes through the ensemble, being altered and distorted in the process. By the end, the melody returns clearly, but with a new perspective from the change it experienced.
